Anger Management

Anger is a very common and natural emotion that everyone experiences regularly throughout their lifetime. However, anger can become intense and difficult to manage. This is when you may need that extra support to help manage your anger. Anger management is a therapy that teaches clients how to manage anger and deal with stress. Anger management helps deal with anger well by identifying triggers, learning effective coping skills, understanding emotions, improving communication skills and making better decisions.

An example of an anger management coping skill is grounding. Grounding is a technique that helps us to focus and more fully tune in to the present moment and turn off the part of our nervous system that is activated when we are stressed and overwhelmed. One example of grounding is the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. Following the instructions below focus your attention on and list either to yourself or outoud 5 things you can see, four you can feel, three you can hear, two you can smell and one you can taste. This helps to preoccupy your mind with your present surroundings and take it off the situation triggering the anger. It also calms down the nervous system.
